From Town & Country

The Duchess of Sussex is no stranger to sartorial diplomacy. On her first official foreign visit to Ireland, she chose a rich green dress for her arrival, and she's been known to wear local designers when she travels for engagements. During the Australian portion of this royal tour, for example, she wore jeans from Outland, an Australian denim brand which provides jobs to survivors of the sex trafficking industry and women at risk of falling into poverty in Cambodia.

In fact, dressing symbolically is something royal women have been doing for years.

"Meghan Markle is not only sartorially savvy and world-wise, but she's also following in the footsteps of female members of the Royal family before her, who used their wardrobes as forms of fashion diplomacy," Renée Kuo, the managing editor of Debrett's, the authority on royal etiquette and and publisher of A-Z of Modern Manners, previously told T&C.

Today, at her first official state dinner as a royal, Meghan chose to wear vibrant Fijian blue, a tribute to the country's flag. Her gown was by Safiyaa, and featured a subtle cape detail. The dress is believed to be the British brand's Ginkgo Cape dress, which is still available online for $1,431.

The stunning diamond drop earrings Meghan paired the dress with are still a bit of a mystery.

Per Emily Andrews, a royal correspondent and host of the royal news podcast "On Heir," the pieces were 'borrowed,' but it's unclear from whom.

"All KP will say is that they’re 'borrowed.' From whom, they will not say. Most likely the Queen," she said in a tweet.
