Meghan Markle has silently endured smear story after smear story in the British tabloids since she and Prince Harry announced their relationship over two years ago. She made headlines this week when she was heard seemingly commenting for the first time on the hate she has received as Prince Harry's wife, saying "they don't make it easy," when talking to Pharrell Williams at The Lion King's London premiere.

Meghan hasn't broken, but People was told by a source in its issue that the Duchess of Sussex hasn't found being royal to be a cake walk. “Meghan has struggled with the intensity of the spotlight,” a source close to the royal household told the outlet. “Although she is a former actress, this is on a different level.”

Kate Middleton understands this pressure, and that's partly why the two women have bonded more. “It is an isolated existence,” an insider told People.

Us Weekly ran a similar report last month about Meghan's coping with the British press. Many of its tabloids constantly scrutinize everything she does, and some outright villify her. "It’s hard for Meghan in London because the press is so vicious to her there," a source told the outlet. "This is her life. But her mentality is like, ‘Well, if this is what it’s going to be like, I’m going to do what I want to do. I won’t play by these rules.'"

ELLE.com reported previously that Kate has been dedicated to helping Meghan as much as she can with this transition. Kate has been “a wonderful support to Meghan, with advice about protocol and life inside the Firm," a royal insider told ELLE.com back in March. "Any transition is difficult, let alone one into an institution steeped in tradition and history."

And Meghan was and is grateful for that support. “Meghan admires how Kate has never put a foot wrong,” a royal source shared with ELLE.com then.
