Meghan Markle Will (Sort Of) Attend Pippa’s Wedding With Prince Harry

Meghan Markle will attend Pippa Middleton’s wedding, People reports. To refresh your memory, Pippa, the younger sister of Kate, is getting married on May 20. Since news of her engagement broke last year, the details of her wedding—from the confirmation of its date to the fact that the Duchess of Cambridge will likely not serve as a bridesmaid—have been closely followed. And despite the fact that we now know that both Prince George and Prince Charlotte will participate in the ceremony, perhaps the most eagerly anticipated bit of news has been whether Prince Harry will receive a plus-one.
In the British royal family, plus-ones are generally only extended to couples who are engaged or married. (The phrase “no ring, no bring” is often used to describe this ethos.) But considering the fact that Prince Harry is very seriously dating American actress Meghan Markle, there has been widespread speculation as to whether she will indeed be invited as his date.
Markle recently attended a Jamaica-set wedding with Prince Harry, and is rumored to be leaving her television show, Suits, in order to move to the U.K. To some, it would therefore seem unkind not to extend her an invitation to Pippa Middleton’s upcoming nuptials. However, to be fair, it is not an uncommon practice to limit plus-ones to those who are married or engaged. Furthermore, there is no evidence that Markle and Pippa have ever actually met.
Despite all this, Markle will reportedly attend the younger Middleton’s upcoming wedding. But there is one catch—Markle is said to be only invited to the reception and will not attend the ceremony. This may seem somewhat harsh, but the practice is typical for English weddings. Things are just a little different when it comes to nuptials across the pond.
