Meghan Markle is so Similar to Princess Diana Says Prince Harry in Netflix Documentary

The first half of Prince Harry and Meghan’s much-anticipated Netflix documentary has aired, with the couple opening up to tell their their love story on their own terms. Harry also speaks candidly about his thoughts and memories of his late mother, drawing parallels between Princess Diana and Meghan.
“So much of what Meghan is and how she is, is so similar to my mum,” Harry says in episode one, which focuses largely on his childhood memories and the earliest days of the couple’s courtship. “She has the same compassion. She has the same empathy. She has the same confidence. She has this warmth about her.”
Recalling memories of his childhood, Harry spoke about being plagued by photographers and struggling following his mother’s death. “My childhood, I remember was filled with laughter, filled with happiness and filled with adventure,” the Prince said. However, he added, “I don’t have many early memories of my mum…It was almost like internally I sort of blocked them out. But I always remember her laugh, her cheeky laugh.”
“The majority of my memories is being swarmed by paparazzi.”
The early parts of the documentary focused heavily on the beginning of the couple’s relationship and how they were determined to follow their hearts despite the logistical challenges of living in different countries and fears over media intrusion. The documentary also features Meghan’s mum Doria, their friends, staff as well as experts talking about the royal family’s position within the UK and around the world. Notably, there is unseen footage which the couple had filmed themselves at various points through their journey including photographs and footage of the couple with their children Archie and Lilibet. Harry also speaks about how he first saw Meghan on her Instagram profile and asked a friend to set them up.
When asked why they wanted to make the documentary, Meghan replied, “When you feel like people haven’t gotten any sense of who you are for so long it’s really nice to be able to have the opportunity to let people have more of a glimpse into what’s happened, and also who we are.”
“This is a great love story,” Harry said. “When I got to know Meghan more and more I was like I’m really falling in love with this girl. So, despite my fear I just opened my heart to see what’s going to happen.” The Prince also pointed out about how things have turned out, “She sacrificed everything that she knew to join me in my world. Then pretty soon after that I ended up sacrificing everything I knew to join her in her world.”
In the series, the couple spoke about the early media intrusion that they faced, with Meghan describing how when the news of the relationship broke that there were photographers outside of her home and cameras even set up in her neighbor’s property. They also spoke about race and the role they believe it played in how she was received by the British press and on social media. Harry pointed out that harassment is mostly online now, in contrast to his mother’s day when it was physical pursuit. A short extract from Princess Diana’s controversial Panorama interview also features in episode one despite the fact that Prince William has called for it never to be aired again.
In episode two, Meghan shared that she thought it was a joke when Harry asked her if she knew how to curtsy before she met his grandmother the Queen. "I didn't know what I was doing," she joked. Harry said that his family were very impressed with Meghan but he thought their judgement of her was clouded by the fact that she was an American actress.
The Prince also revealed that he wanted to propose to Meghan earlier than he did but he had to ask his grandmother the Queen first.
All interviews for the documentary were completed by August 2022, before Queen Elizabeth died. Text at the beginning of the series also said the royal family declined to comment.
