No topics were off limits during Meghan Markle’s primetime interview with Oprah Winfrey on Sunday, but the conversation naturally kept coming back to parenthood.

Some moments were joyful, like when the Sussexes confirmed that they are expecting a baby girl this summer. "To have any child, any one or any two would have been amazing, but to have a boy and then a girl, what more can you ask for?" Prince Harry said, adding, "now we've got our family. We've got the four of us and our two dogs and it's great."

Later, Meghan laughed as she shared the latest additions to Archie's vocabulary. “Oh my gosh, he's on a roll," she said. "In these past couple weeks it has been 'hydrate.' Which is just hysterical."

But other parts of the conversation were more emotional. Meghan revealed that a member of the royal family made comments regarding Archie's skin tone before he was born. She also shared her concerns and her frustration over Archie's lack of security and title.

“They were saying they didn’t want him to be a prince, and that he wasn’t going to receive security,” Meghan said. “He needs to be safe so we're not saying don't make him a prince or princess, but if you're saying the title is what's going to affect that protection, we haven't created this monster machine around us in terms of clickbait and tabloid fodder you've allowed that to happen which means our son needs to be safe.”

To underscore that Archie's title in itself wasn't the key issue, Meghan went on to explain that her own royal title didn't define her, saying "the most important title I’ll ever have is mom."

“All the grandeur surrounding this stuff is an attachment I don’t personally have.” She continued: “I’ve been a waitress, an actress, a princess, a Duchess—I’ve always still just been Meghan, right? I’ve been clear on who I am, independent of all that stuff, and the most important title I’ll ever have is mom. I know that.”

Just two days after the interview aired, Buckingham Palace released a statement in response to the broadcast on behalf of the Queen. Read it here:

The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan.

The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.

Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members.
