Many are still playing catchup, trying to figure out whether or not Queen Elizabeth II really did give permission to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry to name their daughter Lilibet. Sources claim they definitely had permission, while palace insiders claimed that the name decision left the late Queen furious. While this debacle is happening, another royal expert claims that Meghan allegedly went the extra mile to protect Lilibet’s name, by copyrighting it?! Let’s get into it.

Angela Levin speculated on GB News via OK that Meghan copyrighted Lilibet’s name to protect her, or even profit off of the name. “That’s an incredibly sad comment. I think one of the reasons she felt that way was because it was discovered that Meghan, even before Lilibet was born, had taken out the names officially so that she could use them to buy things and to identify them,” she said.

During the interview, presenter Eamonn Holmes asked what we’re all thinking: “What do you mean? They’d copyrighted the name?”

Levin responded by saying, “Yes. Before she had Lilibet, I think that was awful for the Queen because she gets drawn into owning organizations due to the name being so unique.”

A couple of things to note: for one thing, Levin has been called out in the past for her claims that turned out to be the opposite of reality, so as always, take everything with a grain of salt. But, secondly, she’s not wrong on this one, but maybe not in the way you may think.

Copyright is such a strong word, but it’s not far off from what reportedly happened after Meghan and Harry welcomed their daughter into the world.

Back in 2021, a spokesperson for the couple told People that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had registered multiple domains for Lilibet’s name. “As is often customary with public figures, a significant number of domains of any potential names that were considered were purchased by their team to protect against the exploitation of the name once it was later chosen and publicly shared,” they said, with outlets noting the pair bought domains for sites like LilbetDiana.com and LiliDiana.com.

But copyrighting the name? We don’t think they went that far but they did do some protecting by buying domains, as they did with their son Archie, too.

Harry and Meghan started dating in 2016 and by April 2018, they were married in a beautiful royal ceremony. They share two children together named Archie, born in May 2019, and Lilibet Diana, born in June 2021.
