  • Meghan Markle can no longer be a UK citizen, but that’s fine because reports say she dropped the citizenship process a while ago.

  • Meghan needed to stay in England for three years before she could start the citizenship process.

Welp, it looks like Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are one hundred percent satisfied with the way their nonroyal life in America is shaping up! It has been one calendar year since Meghan and Harry stepped back from their senior royal duties, and turns out Meghan has pretty much “abandoned” her past plans to become an official citizen of the United Kingdom, according to The Telegraph.

Reminder: Kensington Palace first announced that Meghan would be applying to become a British citizen once she married into the royal family back in 2017. The UK’s official citizenship process required Meghan to live in the country for three years—since Meghan moved to the UK in November 2017, she would have needed to stay until November 2020 for citizenship to be a possibility. Instead, Meghan and Harry left the UK to live in Montecito, California.

Now that Meghan and Harry have made it clear they won’t be living in the UK, “there was ‘no reason’ to pursue the duchess’s application for dual citizenship,” a source confirmed to The Telegraph. Therefore, Meghan’s citizenship process was dropped. Harry, on the other hand, has no plans to pursue American citizenship.

A source told People that Meghan and Harry have “no regrets” about leaving the monarchy for their quieter life in America, so it all seems to be going well.

“Despite everything that has been going on this year, they don’t regret their move to the U.S.,” the source said. “They love that they are able to focus on projects and causes that are important to them.” A source close to the prince also revealed, “It was always their dream to be financially independent and pay their own way. [2020] started out with a lot of excitement and anticipation. Harry was finally doing what he’d wanted to do for years, and to have Meghan and [20-month-old son] Archie with him was all he could have asked for.”
