In the aftermath of the devastating Grenfell Tower fire in 2017, a group of survivors gathered at the Al Manaar Centre in West London to prepare food together for their families and community. Soon after, that kitchen became the Hubb Community Kitchen, and in September 2018, Meghan Markle's first solo royal project was supporting the organization and even helping them to launch a new charity cookbook called Together.

In the years since, Markle has stayed involved with the group. In 2020, on the third anniversary of the fire, she spoke with the members on a video call from her California home, telling the women she and Prince Harry are "so proud" of them.

"I think back to when I met all of you and how you had all come together in the wake of what you experienced in your community," she said, "and now what you have done is such an inspiration, you continue to give back, you continue to to put love in action. And that’s really what Hubb is all about... we know it means love but you are the example of love in action, and that is your purpose."

She continued, "I’m so proud of you, so is Harry, and we are sending so much love to you from across the pond and thinking of you today, as I’m sure it’s a difficult day, but also one where you can look at how much you’ve accomplished in the past three years, and how you continue to give back and be an example for all of those around you."

This year, on the fire's fifth anniversary, Markle reportedly called the women of the Hubb Community Kitchen to check in. The group shared on their Facebook, "Always very thoughtful, today we received a lovely voice message from the Duchess, being the 5 years anniversary of the Grenfell tragedy, asking how we are, about our children and families and giving us news of hers. Just being her beautiful kind self."

She was not the only member of the royal family to mark the anniversary; Prince William and Kate Middleton attended a memorial service commemorating five years since the tragedy.
