Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s Dog Reportedly Has a Very Sentimental Name
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry haven’t been out and about at an official engagement in months—both because of the global pandemic and the fact that they stepped down as senior working royals.
But thanks to a new book soon to be published, there is no shortage of fresh “news” about the couple. Finding Freedom (out August 11), written by royal reporters Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand, isn’t even out yet, but because of excerpts, we’re learning a lot of (reported) facts about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex—including answers to burning questions like, “What is the name of their dog?”
I kid (sort of), but royal watchers have long wondered about the pup Markle and Prince Harry got after they married in 2018. They once even joked that, “People keep getting her name wrong” but never revealed what that name actually is. While we still don’t know the answer with 100 percent certainty, Scobie and Durand write, per People, that her name is Pula. That name has special meaning as it is the currency in Botswana and also means rain in Setswana, the language of that country. Because rain is not common, it’s considered a blessing.
As Sussex fans well know, Markle and Prince Harry visited the country (a place long special to the prince) in the early stages of their relationship. Last April they also shared a photo from another trip they took to Botswana to help with the Elephants Without Borders charity.
Reportedly Meghan Markle re-created the magical spot as a surprise for Prince Harry on his birthday. “Last year for Harry's birthday, Meghan re-created their Botswana camping adventures in their backyard,” a source said. “It’s a place that means so much to them—and to Harry in particular—so Meghan wanted to bring that happy place to him on his day, so she set up a tent, got sleeping bags, cooked dinner, and re-created Botswana where they fell in love.”
Given all that evidence, it wouldn’t be surprising if Pula was their dog’s name. We’d love to see a photo of her and Archie playing together some day…just saying.
