Meghan Markle & Prince Harry Were *Not* the First Royals to Jump Ship and Move to America
After Princess Martha Louise of Norway confirmed that she’s moving to the United States, we couldn’t help but feel like the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had started a trend. That’s when a light bulb went off, and we realized that Prince Harry and Markle weren’t the first European royals to move across the pond.
In fact, Princess Madeleine of Sweden and her family arrived before them. It all started back in 2018 when the 38-year-old announced that she and her husband, Christopher O’Neill, were relocating to Florida later that year.
Princess Madeleine and O’Neill were accompanied by their three children—Princess Leonore (7), Prince Nicolas (5) and Princess Adrienne (3)—who hadn’t started school at the time. Although the couple resided in New York as newlyweds, this was the first time the entire family had lived in the U.S. And as Vogue points out, other royals have previously done stints in America, including Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice.
The realization on our part came just one day after Princess Martha Louise announced that she and her three daughters—Maud (17), Leah (15) and Emma (12)—will move to the U.S. in the near future, so they can be closer to her long-distance boyfriend, Shaman Durek Verrett.
“Right now, it is COVID and difficult to plan, but we plan to move with time,” Princess Martha Louise told Norway’s VG magazine. “The children will, of course, join. We must have a home in Norway. We’ll still be here a lot. We cannot leave beautiful Norway completely.”
