Kensington Palace announced today that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are expecting their first child in the Spring of 2019. The news comes as they arrive in Australia for their first royal tour.

The Palace made the announcement via Twitter. "Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Sussex is expecting a baby in the Spring of 2019."

The Palace has not yet announced a specific due date for the baby's arrival, but a spokeswoman for Kensington Palace said the duchess was “in good health.”

It has, to put it mildly, been a big year for the Sussexes. This time last year they had not even announced their engagement. That came on November 27, 2017, and months of preparation later, they were married on May 19.

There has been much speculation about whether or not they planned to start a family. On the day they announced their engagement, the couple sat with the BBC for their first joint public interview. When the interviewer asked, "Children?" Harry responded good-naturedly with a chuckle: "Not currently no," and then added, "one step at a time and hopefully we'll start a family in the near future."

He's made a few other lighthearted comments in the last few months. During a visit to Ireland, a well-wisher asked about the couple's baby plans. As People reports, while Harry and Meghan were greeting fans, a woman named Elaine Adam-Stewart asked Harry, "My husband also has red hair and he gave me five children-when are you and Meghan going to get going?"

Harry apparently laughed and replied, "Five children? Too many."

Baby Sussex will be seventh in line for the throne behind Prince Charles, Prince William, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis, and Prince Harry. He or she will be the Queen and Prince Philip's eighth great grandchild.
