The royal family clearly has a soft spot for Prince William and Prince Harry’s mom, Princess Diana. But most of their tributes to Diana have been subtle nods, not public statements. That’s all changed with Meghan Markle and Harry paying tribute to Diana for the first time on Instagram, sharing an inspirational quote from the late princess. The quote speaks to the power of kindness and of giving to others, a message the über-charitable Sussex royals can certainly get behind. And given the way Diana was treated as part of the royal family when she was alive, it’s lovely to see them embracing her in such a public fashion now.

The quote posted to the Sussex Royal Instagram page goes like this: “Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you.” And Meghan and Harry’s caption beneath it announces the start of a series of quotes they’d like to share: “Words have the power to inspire, which is why we’re happy to share some of our favorite quotes. From members of the public to public figures, from teachers and students to young leaders, we begin with a quote from Diana, Princess of Wales.”

Even if they hadn’t publicly shared this quote, Meghan and Harry’s legacy indelibly carries traces of Diana’s influence. From Harry picking up his mother’s habit of kneeling to young children to his and Meghan’s decision to give baby Archie the kind of private life Diana was never afforded, their choices are threaded with lessons from Diana throughout. Diana may have had a complicated legacy while alive, but her sons are ensuring that her charity and warmth are what will be remembered.
