It's officially the end of Meghan Markle, Prince Harry, Prince William, and Kate Middleton's work together on their joint charity, the Royal Foundation. The Press Association reported this morning that the Royal Foundation has confirmed that Duke and Duchess of Sussex are formally set to split from the charity. CNN's Max Foster tweeted that aides attribute the split to the couple's differing roles. The couples will continue to work together on mental health projects like Heads Together, he added.

William is a direct heir to the throne, so he and Kate "are on a more formal, reserved path," Foster wrote. Meghan and Harry have a little more leeway in what they can do since Harry is behind all of William's three kids in the line of succession.

Rumors that Kate, Meghan, William, and Harry would first end their joint work on the Royal Foundation broke at the end of May. The Sun's royal reporter Emily Andrews reported that split was coming but it would be gradual.

“The couples have been given two options-the first is to leave things as they are and the second a complete split," a source explained to Andrews of the situation at the time. “Nothing has been formally ratified but all the mood music is suggesting the Sussexes will break away. The Sussexes weren't in a rush to make any changes, but the Cambridges were. However, it’s a complex procedure and very sensitive. The Cambridges have definite constitutionally-bound roots, and now the Sussexes have married and started a family, with the Duchess being American, they have more freedom. Nothing will be done quickly and it’ll be a phased untangling of many of the joint initiatives, not an overnight chop.”

The Sun reported that Harry and William's strained relationship played some role in the split. “Things did get very bad between the brothers and they didn’t see each other privately for a number of months after the royal wedding," a separate royal source said. “Certainly the animosity over status, money, and Meghan meant that the split in their joint households had to be brought forward much more quickly than anticipated, so perhaps it was inevitable that their joint charity has to be split too."

That source did note that things have gotten better between Harry and William since they stopped working so closely together (Harry and Meghan split off from Kensington Palace into their own new royal household (where they have their own staff) earlier this year.)

"The brothers’ relationship has vastly improved since their working lives have separated," the source said.
