Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Break Silence on Prince Philip's Death

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have released a statement honoring Harry's grandfather Prince Philip, hours after the Palace announced Queen Elizabeth II's husband passed away peacefully at age 99 on Friday morning.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex changed the homepage of their non-profit Archewell's site to pay tribute to Philip's life. “In loving memory of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh 1921-2021. Thank you for your service... You will be greatly missed.”

At this point, funeral plans have not been announced yet. The Palace said this morning that details would be released in due course.

Meghan and Harry are in California. It is unclear whether or not both the Duke and Duchess will fly back to England, as Meghan is pregnant with the couple's second child, and travel restrictions remain in place amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Philip was hospitalized in February and released last month after a successful heart procedure. Gayle King revealed that had Philip passed away before the couple's Oprah interview aired, Harry and Meghan would've postponed its release.

“Well, just so you know, they had done that interview before Prince Phillip went into the hospital,” King said in March. “If something, God forbid, had happened to him, the interview would not have run at this particular time. But the interview was done and was scheduled before he went into the hospital. But a lot of people have raised that point.”

Harry and Meghan did not give much detail on their relationship with Philip in their Oprah interview. But Harry spoke warmly about his relationship with the Queen. “I've spoken more to my grandmother in the last year than I have [in] many, many years,” he said. “My grandmother and I have a really good relationship and understanding, and I have deep respect for her.”
