Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have already had a busy summer, and they haven't even gone on holiday yet. From baby Archie's christening to meeting with Dr. Jane Goodall to watching polo matches with Kate Middleton and Archie's big cousins, George, Charlotte and Louis, they've already had plenty of opportunities to make their own summer traditions.
“Whether it’s to escape, to inform, to inspire or to just turn off the world while you sit by a pool, I love getting lost in a good book,” Markle wrote on her former lifestyle blog in 2014. She then shared some summer reading list picks.
The duchess said she was "undone" by her first pick, The Opposite of Loneliness by Marina Keegan. Her second pick, The Dud Avocado by Elaine Dundy, is one that Markle always goes back to “for summer reading because it’s light and fun, and exactly what I want when I’m laying on a beach.” The book follows a young American who goes to live abroad in Paris in the 1950s. The duchess wrote that the main character "lives wildly and fully, and runs a muck.”
“I love opening the pages and finding little flecks of sand from vacations past,” Markle wrote on The Tig.
Her final pick for summer reading: Where’d You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple, which was recently made into a movie starring Cate Blanchett that is due out on August 16.
Her favorite part of the summer tradition, Markle said, was that her former Suits co-star Sarah Rafferty reads books from the summer reading list with her daughter. The duchess called it “the sweetest tradition I can think of.” Perhaps she's already picked out what books she'll read to Archie when he's old enough?
Markle was previously asked what was the one children's book she couldn't wait to share with her kids. Her answer: The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. And it should come as no surprise, since the former Suits star has been a passionate humanitarian even before joining the royal family. The book, a 1964 classic about a boy and a tree, is an allegory about giving, taking, life, loss and unconditional love.
Just don't forget to pack a box of baby tissues for your next summer vacay, Meghan and Harry.
