Meghan Markle Makes a Surprise Appearance to Honor COVID-19 Relief Heroes

From Cosmopolitan

Meghan Markle made a surprise appearance on CNN’s annual Heroes TV special this past Sunday in order to honor heroes who have helped others amid COVID-19. During her appearance, Meghan thanked people who "stood up and made sure the most basic needs of our communities were met" during a year that's been "universally challenging for everyone."

"We saw the good in people, in our neighbors and in entire communities coming together to say they would not stand by while our neighbors went hungry," she said. "We saw communities standing up and taking action. When kids’ lunch programs came to a halt, we saw our neighbors make sure that those children received the nutrition they need. And when those who are immunocompromised or most vulnerable couldn’t leave their homes, we as a community showed up to deliver the food they needed to their doorsteps."

This is the duchess' first public appearance since authoring a powerful New York Times op-ed about suffering a miscarriage over the summer. In the piece, Meghan spoke about the importance of checking in on each other during the pandemic, stressing how much impact a simple "are you okay?" can have.

"We have learned that when people ask how any of us are doing, and when they really listen to the answer, with an open heart and mind, the load of grief often becomes lighter—for all of us," Meghan wrote. "In being invited to share our pain, together we take the first steps toward healing."
