Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton's trip to Wimbledon 2018 was the first time the Duchesses have stepped out together, without their husbands at their sides. They watched Serena Williams play in the women's final, and even though she lost, Meghan and Kate appeared to enjoy each other's company at the sporting event, and to have the opportunity to spend some time together.

Fellow royals, Princess Diana and Sarah, Duchess of York, also used to attend Wimbledon together. Photographed in both 1988 and 1989, Diana and Sarah seemed just as close as Meghan and Kate were at this year's event.

Pictured here at Wimbledon on June 27, 1988, Princess Diana and the Duchess of York greeted each other with a kiss on the cheek, and then talked with a mutual friend sitting between them:

The following year, on July 5, 1989, an almost identical photo of the pair was taken, with Princess Diana leaning over a different mutual friend who sat in between them, so that she could chat to the Duchess of York:

Similarly, Meghan and Kate spent much of their time at Wimbledon talking and laughing one another. By all accounts, it appears that the Duchesses have grown very close since Meghan joined the family in May 2018, when she married Prince Harry:

Diana and Sarah often sat together at events, and appeared to have had a close friendship. Here they are at the Guard's Polo Club in Windsor, in June 1982:
