In addition to being stylish, Meghan Markle’s outfit choices often hold a deeper meaning. Whether she’s paying homage to her late mother-in-law Princess Diana or shedding light on sustainability in the fashion industry, the 38-year-old Duchess of Sussex always puts her most thoughtful sartorial foot forward.
So, when she and her husband, Prince Harry, arrived at the Justice Desk initiative in the Nyanga township in Cape Town, South Africa, today, you bet she was wearing something fashionable with an important message.
Markle arrived at the Justice Desk, which teaches children about their rights and offers self-defense classes and female empowerment training to young girls, wearing a black and white wrap dress from a sustainable African brand.
The duchess opted for the Dalitoso maxi wrap dress in black and white DNA ($86). The frock comes courtesy of Mayamiko, an ethical and sustainable Malawi brand made by local artisans, and is both vegan and 100% cotton. The print is even inspired by African artisanal traditional prints. Unfortunately, the royal-approved number sold out almost immediately, but the Patricia bow front bralette in black and white DNA ($31) is still available and features the same fabric.
Mayamiko’s designs aren’t just chic. The brand works in partnership with the Mayamiko Trust, a charity that aims to enrich the lives of disadvantaged people in Malawi by encouraging their creative talents and helping them develop a trade. This allows people to build toward a better future and grow out of poverty. The Mayamiko Fashion Lab provides training in sewing and tailoring, as well as financial and business skills to local women, many of whom have been impacted by HIV. Those who train at the lab and opt to stay with the company after matriculating are given living wages, free feminine hygiene products (which are not often readily available), a pension, support to set up their own independent businesses and a nutritious meal daily and are treated fairly and not discriminated against.
