Meghan Markle Just Spoke Out About Voting in the 2020 Election

Meghan Markle has been speaking out about issues and causes that matter most to her ever since she was a little girl and didn't like the sexist tones of a dish-soap commercial

Well before her marriage to Prince Harry, the Duchess of Sussex was known as a champion of equal rights. During the 2016 election cycle, she was vocal about her opinions on Donald Trump—calling him “divisive” and “misogynistic" in an interview. But after becoming a working member of the royal family, Markle tempered her political commentary (as is custom). She didn't even respond when Trump reportedly called her “nasty.”

Now Markle and Harry and Archie are back living in the U.S., and she's speaking out about why it's personally important for her to vote.

“I know what it's like to have a voice, and also what it's like to feel voiceless,” she told Marie Claire. “I also know that so many men and women have put their lives on the line for us to be heard. And that opportunity, that fundamental right, is in our ability to exercise our right to vote and to make all our voices heard.”

“One of my favorite quotes,” she continued, “and one that my husband and I have referred to often, is from Kate Sheppard, a leader in the suffragist movement in New Zealand, who said, ‘Do not think your single vote does not matter much. The rain that refreshes the parched ground is made up of single drops.’ That is why I vote.”

Surely, much will be inferred from her comments about feeling voiceless and what that means about her life as a royal—but what is clear is how important she feels every single vote is…and she's right.

I can only imagine that women and the upcoming election is a likely topic when Markle takes her turn as the interviewer in an upcoming panel discussion about gender and representation with The 19th*'s Emily Ramshaw on August 14

We can't wait.
