Every so often, I question why a trend recirculates; do we really want low-rise jeans to rise from the dead? Though, there will rarely ever be a comeback style that wins the likes of everyone, hence why fashion is so fun. But Meghan Markle wore a throwback trend that’s almost guaranteed to gain mass approval.

For the anniversary of the Invictus Games, Markle’s trip to Abuja, Nigeria with Prince Harry offered a departure from her usual wardrobe full of elevated basics. Bold colors and traditional separates defined her fashion, and she even slipped on a pair of $450 thong sandals from Emme Parsons, which she wore last year. The squint-to-see shoes reminded me of my go-to high school sandals, boasting thin straps, a slim buckle, short heel, and all-black body. While they’re still in stock, I found several other options, starting at $22.

I had forgotten about the divisive footwear that resembles those undergarments, but Markle proved why everyone—no matter your age or style—should own a pair. First off, they’re downright classy. Their minimalist design offers an opposing take on the chunky shoes that have saturated mainstream fashion. An option that lets the rest of your ensemble do the talking is a breath of fresh air to own. The barley there coverage is also ideal for hot summer months; I can’t speak for you, but wearing shoes and socks that insulate heat in 80-degree weather isn’t for me. Not to mention, cute seasonal pedicures finally have a chance to shine.

Markle-inspired sandals are also practical thanks to their back strap. While unassuming, the thin detail holds your foot in place versus a flip flop that flies off when you least expect it. Most versions, like this Sam Edelman Gigi shoe and on-sale Tommy Hilfiger option, additionally have adjustable buckles, giving you the perfect fit.

If you’re still unconvinced, a quick scan of celebrity fans should increase your faith in the style. How can it not when Zoë Kravitz, Gabrielle Union, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Heidi Klum, and Selena Gomez have taken elegant approaches to the controversial T-strap shoe? Each one is a tad different, catering to each A-lister’s unique fashion game.

Securing a thong sandal, whether Markle’s exact pick or a more budget-friendly option, shouldn’t be challenging either. There are tons of brands, comfort-levels, and designs out there, making it easy to find your choice shoe. Dress up your new shoes with maxi dresses and floral skirts or go casual with cut-off shorts and a T-shirt; they’re that simple to style.
