Many moms and dads have sweet nicknames for their children, and clearly the royals are no exception. The Duchess of Sussex has been heard referring to baby Archie affectionately as “bubba” as he made his first appearance of the royal tour in South Africa yesterday.

Meghan appears to call her almost five month old son by the pet name twice in video footage of their meeting with Archbishop Desmond Tutu at his legacy foundation in Cape Town. In a video posted on the Sussexes’ Instagram account of the family walking to the meeting (above) she can be heard saying “bubba.” She also uses the term later on when the royals and their hosts are sitting having tea.

“Say hello, hello,” the duchess says to Archie in this video before exclaiming “Oh, bubba!”

There was lots of laughter during the 30 minute meeting with anti-apartheid leader Tutu and his daughter Thandeka. Harry told the archbishop about Archie, “He’s so busy, constantly wanting to stand.” Meghan described her son as an “old soul,” and Harry added, “I think he knows exactly what’s going on.”

Last night, the Sussexes posted a montage of footage from the meeting on their social media account set to the music “Oh Happy Day.” The footage showed Meghan holding her son in the air and bouncing him up and down. Images released of the meeting include one of Tutu kissing Archie on the forehead in the doorway of his home.

At this point, it's unclear if Archie will make any other appearances during the tour.
