It’s official: Meghan Markle will be traveling to Düsseldorf, Germany, on September 9, alongside her husband Prince Harry, for the kick-off of the 2023 Invictus Games. (Perfect timing given the five-part docuseries, Heart of Invictus, premieres on Netflix on August 30, giving viewers a front row seat to the impact and meaning of the annual sporting competition for wounded, injured and sick servicemen, which Harry launched in 2014.)

Back to the Duchess of Sussex. Yes, the Invictus Games are hugely significant for her and her spouse, but they also have long served as a style runway for Meghan, from the moment she first appeared by Prince Harry’s side at the Toronto games in 2017 to the present, when public outings by the royal pair are few and far between.

So, what will Meghan wear this year as she appears by Harry’s side supporting his work presumably from the event kick-off through September 16 when the competition concludes? As we wait to find out—and take our royal style cue—here’s a look back at Meghan’s most memorable Invictus Games fashion moments over the years.

1. When Meghan Stepped Out Wearing the ‘Husband’ Shirt in Toronto

It was Meghan and Harry’s first official appearance together—at the 2017 Invictus Games in Toronto. Meghan donned a pair of ripped jeans and an oversize button-up, later revealed to be her pal and fashion designer Misha Nonoo’s signature style called the ‘Husband’ shirt. The royal rumor mill went wild as a result—and less than two months later, in November 2017, it was confirmed: Meghan and Harry were engaged.

2. Then Followed It Up in Burgundy Monochrome

Alongside her friend Markus Anderson, Meghan was pictured attending the opening ceremony of the Toronto Invictus Games. This was actually the first appearance by the Suits actress at the 2017 competition, but it was unofficial, given that Prince Harry was on stage vs. by her side. Still, all eyes were on the soon-to-be Duchess of Sussex, who chose her attire carefully, sporting a pleated Aritzia dress in burgundy and matching biker jacket from Mackage, both Canadian brands.

3. When Meghan Dressed Down in Sydney

Flash forward to 2018, when fresh off their fairy tale royal wedding, Meghan joined Prince Harry in Australia and New Zealand in May for their first official royal tour. They also had big news: Meghan was pregnant. (Baby Archie would arrive in May the following year.) But that didn’t stop Meghan from participating in many an Invictus Games event. Case in point, when the Duchess of Sussex dressed in athleisure to join Harry and cheer on the sailors racing in Sydney Harbour. Meghan’s sneakers—Veja’s V-10 style—are still a royal fan favorite in her honor.

4. Then Handed Out Awards in a Blazer and Cropped Pants

More from Sydney: Here, Meghan joined Harry to cheer on the teams competing in the basketball finals, handing out gold medals to the winning team. For the occasion, Meghan chose a garnet-hued wrap jacket from Australian-based brand Scanlan Theodore and paired it with a cropped black pant. Another stand-out from the Duchess of Sussex’s Sydney-based Invictus look: her Sarah Flint pumps.

5. When Meghan Wore a Shirtdress to Sydney’s Closing Ceremony

In front of a sold-out crowd at the Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney’s Olympic Park, Meghan took the stage—and brought the house down—while delivering a speech dressed in a sleeveless olive green dress made by British designer Antonio Berardi. Also of note, her Aquazzura ‘Casablanca’ shoes, which featured a multi-strand ankle strap and 4-inch heel.

6. Then Donned Head-to-Toe White in the Hague

Thanks to the pandemic, the Netherlands-based Invictus Games were postponed from 2020 to the fall of 2022. The pandemic may have been in the past at this point for Harry and Meghan, but so was their royal exit—in March 2020, the Sussexes marked their last series of events as working royals. This meant all eyes were on Invictus, Meghan included, who made her opening day appearance in a double-breasted Valentino suit.

7. When Meghan Repeated Her White-on-Denim Look

Next up in the Hague, Meghan joined Harry to watch several of the competitions, this time wearing an homage to her very first Invictus Games appearance back in Toronto in 2017. Her style recipe: A white top (this time, a belted jacket from Brandon Maxwell, which mirrored her ‘Husband’ shirt) and a pair of skinny jeans in a darker wash. To round out the look, she wore cognac-colored Manolo Blahnik pumps.

8. Then Wore Denim Again

Another day, another denim look—for the Jaguar Land Rover Challenge, Meghan wore a Céline jacket in bouclé tweed, a tank and skinny jeans from New York-based brand Moussy.

9. When Meghan Donned Another Valentino Style in the Hague

This time, Meghan wore an all-white laser cut-out Valentino mini dress for an Invictus Games Foundation event.

10. Then Brought the House Down with an Homage to Diana

For royal watchers, Meghan’s choice of a Khaite bodysuit had them flashing back to earlier royal days, specifically portraits snapped of Princess Diana in 1997 by the legendary photographer Mario Testino. In them, the Princess of Wales wore an off-the-shoulder gown by Catherine Walker. The textured knot and ruching on the style worn by Meghan to the opening ceremony in the Hague felt strikingly similar to the look worn by her late mother-in-law.
