Meghan Markle’s Hatch Dress and 3 Other Maternity Brands That Are Actually Chic

It could be the first time the duchess publicly wore something meant for moms-to-be.

To be blunt, the maternity clothing market is less than thrilling. The fashion available to moms-to-be is few and far between, often either made with bad, stretchy Lycra or cut in the silhouette of a matronly muumuu. There are only a few dedicated maternity labels that are making stylish, beautifully tailored pieces. Earlier this week, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex wore one of them. Meghan visited Smart Works, an organization that helps get unemployed women back into the workforce, wearing a simple black dress from New York–based brand Hatch.

Founded in 2011 by Ariane Goldman, Hatch offers wardrobe pieces and natural beauty products for expectant moms who have a keen sense of style and are, in a word, cool. Goldman’s linen jumpers, boyishly cut shirting, and cozy stretch knits are exactly the kind of anti-traditional maternity swag the world needs, on top of ready-to-wear labels like Dôen which have become popular alternatives to classic maternitywear.

There’s no doubt that Meghan’s Eliza dress will sell out soon at Hatch. In the meantime, here are three more worthwhile maternity brands to peruse.

Bianca Balti

Model Bianca Balti launched her eponymous line of dresses and bolero jackets in September of last year. Her collections are inspired by the likes of a pregnant Jane Birkin and Brigitte Bardot, with sweet, sophisticated baby doll shapes and detailing that includes velvet, crystals, and ruffles. If you’re a mom-to-be who is aching to ditch the leggings and peasant tops for something a little dressier, Balti’s pieces are what you should be shopping for.

Madri Collection

Technically, Madri is a “ready-to-mother” collection of chic clothing that makes breastfeeding easier. Ashley Melone and Danielle Walish launched the label last year, and, though their designs are focused on post-pregnancy, the easy panel tops and work shirts will work for an expecting mom looking to up her maternity wardrobe game.

Blanqi

Not only are these basic leggings, tanks, and bras aesthetically appealing, they’re also designed with comfort and relief in mind. Blanqi’s “supportwear” tops are made with a built-in belly supporter which helps to lift and redistribute weight, thereby alleviating some of the back pain and pressure.
