  • Fun fact: Meghan Markle impressed the royal family—and Prince William—with a gag gift a few years ago.

  • Meghan gave William a spoon that had a cheesy pun engraved on it.

Remember the royal rift? Yeah, well, believe it or not, there were some fun times between Meghan Markle, Prince Harry, Prince William, and Kate Middleton in the past!! Case in point: When Meghan spent her first Christmas with Harry and his family before their big royal wedding in 2018, she adhered to family tradition and picked out an inexpensive gag gift for William, which ended up scoring her major points with the royals.

In an excerpt from Finding Freedom obtained by People, royal journalists Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand wrote that giving a good gift to the royals was basically “an audition like no other, and [Meghan] wanted to impress her future royal relatives.” (Could not imagine having that type of pressure riding on a single Christmas gift, but okaaay.)

“To that end, Meghan’s biggest challenge was finding the perfect novelty gifts to amuse her new extended family,” Scobie and Durand continued. “At least one of her gifts was a huge hit—a spoon for William that had ‘cereal killer’ embossed on the shallow bowl end of the utensil.” Honestly, it sounds like Meghan’s gift was right on the money—there was one year where Kate gave Harry a Grow Your Own Girlfriend kit, so…!

Christmas is going to look a lot different for the royals this year. Meghan and Harry are preparing for the holiday stateside in California, while William and Kate will be celebrating away from Queen Elizabeth’s Sandringham Castle in order to adhere to COVID-19 guidelines. There’s always next year, right?
