  • The Mirror reports that Meghan Markle sent an "intriguing gift" to First Lady Jill Biden.

  • Markle gifted the First Lady a basket of lemons as a "thank you" for her support after Markle's Oprah interview.

  • The gift was purportedly inspired by the First Lady's supportive choice of dress the day after the interview aired.

A super fun thing about covering the goings on of the Royal Family is that the "anonymous sources" that speak to the British press make absolutely zero effort to hide their point of view when it comes to relaying facts about, or even just inferences regarding, anyone associated with the House of Windsor.

Like, when you come across a line like "Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been 'trying to gain political influence in the United States' since moving away from the UK," as was the case in a recent Mirror story, you're not gonna mistake the tone for one of "And we think that's just swell!"

But within this story of how supposedly "the couple 'tried a variety of methods' to connect with the Bidens and build up their status and stance in the country" is a fascinating anecdote about a peculiar gift the actress-turned-princess sent the current First Lady of the United States.

In what the article calls an "intriguing gift," it turns out that "Meghan sent Jill a basket of lemons as a 'thank you' gift" after her and Harry's famous Oprah interview.

Now, if that makes no sense to you, let us explain the thinking behind the gift. Honestly, it won't make that much more sense, but we're here, so we might as well try.

We all remember Meghan and Harry's seismic interview with Oprah, which aired on March 7, 2021. While the Bidens never issued any definitive public statement "taking sides" on the matter, the article notes that "many believe that the Bidens were sympathetic and subtly showed their solidarity to Meghan and Harry in a very sweet way."

That's supposedly because the day after the interview aired, Jill Biden "was seen wearing an Oscar de la Renta dress that was very similar to a dress from the same brand that Meghan had worn a month earlier."

And because this allegedly symbolic dress had a "lemon hue," Meghan reportedly gifted the aforementioned basket of lemons to Jill as a thank-you for the show of support.

Now, one might say that this level of coded message reading feels more like that guy who swore to you that there are Beatles lyrics that prove Paul McCartney is dead than the actions of hugely influential political figures. But let's believe in the lemon story for all its glorious absurdity.
