Meghan Markle Broke Royal Hair Protocol Yet Again With Her Messy Bun

Meghan Markle, the soon-to-be-royal, continues to break royal hair protocol (not that anyone minds). She just wore a low messy bun to her first official visit to Nothern Ireland with Prince Harry.

Meghan Markle, our rebellious queen, continues to break royal protocol, and her latest act of defiance is one of her (and our) favorites: the messy bun. On Friday, America's favorite royal-to-be made her first official visit with Prince Harry to Belfast, Northern Ireland. Although her knit top and pencil skirt were very Kate Middleton vibes, her hairdo was all her own style. Once again, Markle decided to rock her signature, a low, loose twist and a perfectly executed variation on that California-girl staple, the messy bun. And once again, she shook royal style purists to the core.

As many news outlets reported the last time she did this, Markle is actually breaking (or at least heavily stretching) a royal style rule. There's a reason you usually see Kate Middleton's low side-buns and chignons contained in a hairnet, and why the Queen is always sporting a cool hat. According to People, royals are supposed to look impeccably styled. While we would argue that Markle's messy bun is the definition of impeccable style, it appears as though the royals interpret that to mean sleek and smooth, with no stray hairs peeking out of a twist or falling over the face. In fact, according to the BBC, this rule used to be so strict that up until the 1950s, women wore hats everywhere because it was not "the thing" for women to show hair in public.

Fortunately, that's no longer a rule, although when she does choose to wear a hat, Markle easily stuns. Like earlier this month, when she attended her first public event with Queen Elizabeth II and rocked a slanted white beret over sleek, loose waves. Honestly though, with how often Markle rocks it, they should just go ahead and make the messy bun royal protocol.
