In stark contrast to the fairytale narrative assigned to the typical royal wedding, the days leading up to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s May 19 nuptials have been anything but picture-perfect.

Drama reached an all-time high this week when it came to light that Meghan’s father, Thomas Markle Sr., staged a series of paparazzi photos of himself preparing for the royal wedding. The pics were originally thought to be candid.

The drama only gained traction when it was revealed that Markle Sr. would no longer be attending the wedding, due in part to the fact that he’d suffered a heart attack days prior.

Just when we thought things were dying down, reports surfaced that Meghan’s father, buoyed by the request of his daughter, had changed his mind and was planning to attend the wedding and walk Meghan down the aisle after all.

It must be over now, right? NOPE. Markle Sr. spoke out again, confirming that he would not be attending the wedding, as he was scheduled to have surgery on Wednesday, just three days ahead of the May 19 ceremony.

On Thursday morning, Meghan herself settled the matter, releasing the following statement via Kensington Palace:

“Sadly, my father will not be attending our wedding. I have always cared for my father and hope he can be given the space he needs to focus on his health.

I would like to thank everyone who has offered generous messages of support. Please know how much Harry and I look forward to sharing our special day with you on Saturday.”
