What Meghan Markle's Wedding Dress Could Look Like
It's official: Meghan Markle is now a duchess, a princess, and an official style queen. The American actress marries Prince Harry today at Windsor Castle, and she did not disappoint when it came to her royal wedding dress. The design is by British designer, Clare Waight Keller. Keller became the first female Artistic Director at the historic French fashion house Givenchy last year.
"After meeting Ms. Waight Keller in early 2018, Ms. Markle chose to work with her for her timeless and elegant aesthetic, impeccable tailoring, and relaxed demeanour," Kensington Palace announced in a statement. "Ms. Markle also wanted to highlight the success of a leading British talent who has now served as the creative head of three globally influential fashion houses – Pringle of Scotland, Chloé, and now Givenchy."
The simple yet instantly classic dress featured a bateau neckline, three-quarter sleeves, and flowing train. Hand-embroidered floral designs on her 5-meter-long veil represent all 53 countries of the Commonwealth.
Meghan Markle had previously hinted at her bridal style in past interviews. "I have the luxury of wearing beautiful pieces of clothing every day for work, so my personal style - wedding or not - is very pared down and relaxed," Markle told Glamour in 2016. "Classic and simple is the name of the game, perhaps with a modern twist."
It's no surprise then that she named Carolyn Bessette Kennedy's Narcisco Rodriguez-designed slip as her favorite celebrity wedding dress of all time. "Everything goals," she said of the '90s style, before adding that she personally prefers "wedding dresses that are whimsical or subtly romantic."
Given the formality of St. George's Chapel and the fact that her groom is an actual prince, it's no surprise Meghan went for a different look than what she wore to her first wedding. When she married her first husband Trevor Engelson in Jamaica in 2011, she wore a "sleek, strapless, floor-length white dress with diamante waist detail," according to Metro.
This time, her sparkle came in the form of a gorgeous tiara: Queen Mary's diamond bandeau tiara, lent to the bride by the Queen. The diamond and platinum bandeau was made in 1932, but the center brooch dates back to 1893, according to the palace.
The look of course drew comparisons to her sister-in-law Kate Middleton. The Duchess of Cambridge wore a Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen gown on her wedding day in 2011. The long sleeves mimicked Queen Elizabeth's own gown, as well as Grace Kelly and glamorous '50s bridal style.
Meghan Markle's wedding dress of course now becomes a part of history itself, just like the iconic gowns worn by Princess Diana and other royal brides. This isn't her only outfit of the day either.
She's reportedly changing into a second wedding dress for the receptions at St. George's Hall and Frogmore House "so that she can party the night away in something glamorous and less restrictive," a source previously told Vanity Fair.
