What does one wear to open a bridge? It's a question Meghan Markle, the newly named Duchess of Sussex, likely asked herself for the first time recently.

For her first solo appearance with the Queen (and her first official event as a royal without Prince Harry by her side), Markle opted for a rather demure, beige-colored dress by Givenchy.

She paired the look paired with a thin belt, small black clutch, and black pointy-toe pumps, which according to royal fashion blog Meghan's Mirror, are from Sarah Flint.

Given the recent outpouring of judgement over Meghan's clothing, and in particular the conversation over what breaks protocol, it's unsurprising that she would choose something so conservative and so ladylike for her day of engagements with the Queen.

Despite what many publications and vocal users on Twitter may think, royal protocol doesn't have anything to do with fashion. There's no royal fashion rulebook. But, at the same time, Meghan doesn't want to distract from the purpose of her day with the Queen, hence her covered shoulders.

The colors the two women wore are also symbolic. Meghan is there to support the Queen, hence her more neutral-colored dress, which is striking in comparison to the Queen's bright green ensemble. Yes, Meghan is extremely popular, but the Queen is still the reason why an event like this is even taking place.

Robert Hardman, the Queen's biographer once quoted her as saying, "I can never wear beige because nobody will know who I am."

While we can't imagine a scene where people don't know Meghan Markle, perhaps that's a tip the Duchess of Sussex will pick up from today.

In addition to opening a bridge today, Meghan and the Queen will also visit a theater and have lunch at Chester Town Hall. See all the photos of the pair's day of royal events, right here.
