As you've probably noticed, Suits legend-turned-Duchess Meghan Markle typically prefers a simple and enviably glow-y beauty look. And she almost always wears a nude lip. In fact, I dug through every single one of Meghan's appearances since becoming a royal, and (unless I missed one in which case feel free to drag me) she's never worn red lipstick. Until! Last! Night!

Meghan and Harry showed up to the circus (casual Weds!) on January 16, and Megs paired her sparkly blue gown with a very bold and very berry lip.

This look is a pretty huge departure for Meghan, especially since she's been known to not love a red lip. "The one time she did a red lip, she just didn't feel comfortable in it," Meghan's makeup artist Daniel Martin (who did her wedding look) told People. "She likes to talk and she's not a fussy person, so she doesn't want to have to worry about anything. They have so many engagements, you just have to stick with what you know and feel comfortable and confident and just own it."

Of course, Meghan's been seen wearing red lipstick a few (very few) times before-just not since her transformation into a casual Duchess. Like, here she is an an event in 2016:

And while it's clear she broke her own personal protocol last night, fun fact: wearing a bold lip isn't in any way a breach of royal protocol! In fact, here's The Queen rocking red in 2018:
