  • Rapper Megan Thee Stallion is trademarking her catchphrase, “Hot Girl Summer,” Billboard reported.

  • The breakout hip-hop star teased earlier this month that she’s been “in the process” of getting a trademark for the saying.

Megan Thee Stallion is taking official credit for everyone’s favorite catchphrase of 2019. Billboard confirmed that the Houston-bred rapper is taking steps to trademark her motto, “Hot Girl Summer,” which her fans have spread and popularized in her honor.

By now, you’ve probably seen the slogan everywhere from Instagram captions to Twitter memes. Brands have even co-opted the phrase in social media posts and email subject lines, and Future went as far as releasing a “Hot Boy Summer” Spotify playlist. (Megan dropped her version the day after.) By moving forward with the trademark, the Fever MC—who’s also known as “Hot Girl Meg” and calls her fans “hotties”—takes rightful ownership of her viral saying.

Trademarking catchphrases is nothing new for rappers. As Billboard pointed out, Cardi B tried to trademark her go-to expression, “Okurrr,” in March, but the application was denied, partly because it’s also a commonly used term in the drag community.

It’s unclear if “Hot Girl Summer” will have the same fate, as it’s been pending trademark approval for at least a couple weeks. Megan confirmed to a fan on Twitter on June 10 that it’s been “in the process” of getting trademarked.

Despite its ubiquity, the notion of a “Hot Girl Summer” has no singular definition. However, Hot Girl Meg herself recently explained that “Being a Hot Girl is about being unapologetically YOU, having fun, being confident, living YOUR truth, being the life of the party etc.”

She’s also teased the idea of releasing an actual “Hot Girl Summer” anthem before the season is over, which we can’t believe doesn’t already exist.
