What Happens Later is the new rom-com from genre queen Meg Ryan, only it’s not the cutesy love flick you might expect.

The star of When Harry Met Sally, You’ve Got Mail, and Sleepless in Seattle’s latest film has been given an R-rating by the Motion Picture Association, which means those under 17 require an accompanying parent or adult guardian.

As a result, it now shares the same rating as Eli Roth’s brutal new film, also rated R. It’s a bold move for what on the surface seems like a gentle comedy-drama about two former lovers stuck together in an airport during a winter storm.

Unless there’s a surprising amount of violence and nudity, the rating’s more than likely been given for bad language. Ryan and her co-star David Duchovny must be cursing up a storm.

What Happens Later not only gives a writing co-credit to Ryan, but also marks her second directorial effort, after 2016 WW2 drama Ithaca, which reunited her with rom-com king Tom Hanks.

Duchovny, meanwhile, is soon to star in a Stephen King adaption. Check out the Pet Sematary: Bloodlines Trailer here.

What Happens Later hits theaters Friday November 3, 2023. But remember, it’s for adults only.
