How They Met: Quaid and Ryan originally met while filming the 1987 sci-fi movie Innerspace, but it wasn’t until they starred in 1988 thriller D.O.A. that they began dating. The pair wed on Valentine’s Day in 1991 and welcomed son (and fellow actor) Jack in 1992.

Why We Loved Them: They were living, breathing, early ‘90s proof that you can have it all: a hot spouse, an even hotter career, a haircut rivaling the popularity of “The Rachel” … But alas, that beautiful bubble had to pop sometime.

The Breakup: Meg Ryan set the bar for Y2K drama when the timeline of her and Quaid’s divorce appeared to intersect with that of her burgeoning relationship with Proof of Life co-star Russell Crowe.

The former All-American good girl, known for her turn in a string of wildly successful rom-coms including When Harry Met Sally and Sleepless in Seattle, saw her sweet image sour in the press. “So this is what it feels like to be the Scarlet Woman,” Ryan told W magazine in October of 2000. “I'm having that experience now!”

Amid the height of the tabloid drama, the actress insisted that Crowe played no role in the end of her marriage. "It dissolved before it became sport for the press,” she said of her relationship with Quaid. “The public and the press tuned in way after. The reasons we broke up have nothing to do with another person.”

After nearly a decade of silence regarding the split, Ryan returned to the fore in 2008, telling InStyle that Crowe was the least of her marriage’s problems. “Dennis was not faithful to me for a long time, and that was very painful. I found out more about that once I was divorced,” she revealed.

“Russell didn’t break up the marriage,” she reiterated. “He was definitely there at the end, but it wasn’t his fault. I was a mess. I hurt him, too, at the end. I couldn’t be in another long relationship, it wasn’t the time for that. So I got out.”

Unsurprisingly, Quaid was not pleased with his ex’s newfound candidness. "It was eight years ago, and I find it unbelievable that Meg continues publicly to rehash and rewrite the story of our relationship," he told The New York Daily News. "Also, I find it regrettable that our son, Jack, has to be reminded in a public way of the turmoil and pain that every child feels in a divorce."

Last summer, the actor humbly came forth with another reason their marriage failed: fame.

While his career took a dip in the ‘90s, Ryan only continued to surge in popularity. “When we met I was the big deal,” he said — and when that dynamic shifted, Quaid struggled. “We’d go out on the streets of New York and it would be like, ‘Meg! Meg!’ And I have to admit it, I actually did feel like I disappeared. I didn’t think I was that small, but I was,” he said.

Despite the many issues between them, Quaid considers his 9-year marriage to Ryan “the most successful relationship of my life.”

Where They Are Now: Ryan decided to expand her family as a single mom, adopting daughter Daisy (now 14) in 2006.

The actress recently got engaged to singer John Mellencamp, whom she’s been dating on-and-off since 2011.

Meg’s spent considerably less time in the public eye in the past decade. The rom-com queen stepped behind the camera in 2015, directing her son Jack in coming-of-age film Ithaca. One of the biggest hits of her career, You’ve Got Mail, celebrates its 20th anniversary this month.

Quaid wed real-estate broker girlfriend Kimberly Buffington-Quaid in 2004. The couple welcomed twins Zoe and Thomas (now 11) via surrogate in 2007. In June 2016, Quaid and his wife announced they were ending their 12-year marriage. The divorce was finalized nearly two years later in April 2018.

Professionally, Quaid’s stayed active in the nearly two decades since his and Ryan’s split. The actor has several projects in the works, including A Dog’s Purpose sequel A Dog’s Journey and Ronald Reagan biopic Reagan.
