Giant sharks, a monster octopus, and Jason Statham - what’s not to like? Quite a lot according to critics, who have labelled Meg 2: The Trench as a megalodon't.

Reviews have gone live, and there’s blood in the water for Ben Wheatley’s aquatic action film.

Meg 2: The Trench opened with a Jaws-dropping 0% score on Rotten Tomatoes after six reviews, and hasn’t risen much higher since, currently gasping for air with a meagre 23% following the bulk of verdicts.

With one-star scores from the likes of BBC and Movie Nation, it seems like Meg 2: The Trench might have well and truly jumped the shark. It's almost as absurd as 2 guys handmaking all the chainmail for Lord of the Rings.

Meg 2: The Trench swims into theatres today, but before you see it, check out the reviews below.

Review roundup

  • BBC: “When a gigantic octopus tentacle reached out of the ocean to grab Meiying, it suddenly made me think of a very good octopus dish at a local restaurant. I wasn't even hungry. It's just that easy to lose interest in anything going on in this movie.”

  • IGN: Meg 2: The Trench has all the excitement of fishing solo for two hours without a single bite. Wheatley is a shell of himself behind the camera, devoid of personality and originality”

  • Deadline: “Tedious sequel is missing original’s bite and gets lost at sea…At several points along the way you could bang your hand to your forehead in reaction to how random and non-transporting the action is.”

  • Digital Spy: Meg 2 is a movie that's never quite sure if it wants to play things totally straight or be self-aware, if it wants to be an actually serious horror movie (there are well-timed jump scares) or a ludicrous shark-chomping actioner."

  • The AV Club: “It lacks the drive, imagination, and sense of awe to work as a pastiche of Aliens, The Abyss, Jaws, and Jurassic Park. But the more fulsomely the movie embraces its big budget, DVD-era silliness, the longer it and the audience are riding the same enjoyably stupid wave.”

  • Mashable:Meg 2: The Trench cruises into Sharknado territory, albeit with a bigger budget and stronger spectacle. And maybe that wouldn't be so bad if this sequel didn't feel cynical in its showmanship.”
