Meet the Woman Behind Glossier Brown, the Instagram Account for POC Who Love Glossier

Glossier rep Devin McGhee started an Instagram account to help people with deeper skin tones see how the products look on people of color.

Like so many people who love Glossier, Atlanta-based grad student Devin McGhee got hooked after trying her very first product. She stans so hard for the brand, in fact, that she became a rep, allowing her to sell Glossier products through her own page. But McGhee really took her devotion to the next level when she launched the @glossierbrown Instagram account, a feed devoted to people of color wearing and using Glossier products.

"It was amazing to see all of these women of color interested in a brand that I adore so much,” McGhee told Teen Vogue about the direct messages she’d get regarding Glossier products after she became a rep, "but I needed a better way to field their questions, manage the load, and show women of all complexions using Glossier products. That's how Glossier Brown was born." And in the short time it’s been live, it has gained more than 1,000 followers who appreciate not only the relatable imagery and inspiring look ideas but the feeling of community that’s already burgeoning.

"As a chocolate woman, my skin's undertones change with the seasons. Therefore, in the winter, I mix Glossier Perfecting Skin Tint in Deep and Rich for the perfect shade. Whereas in the summer, Rich is my perfect shade alone. But no one knows that unless we share that information with each other, like girlfriends,” McGhee told Teen Vogue, explaining how important it is to her for fellow Glossier fans to help each other out. On the feed, she shares both pictures of herself and of fans who have tagged @glossierbrown. "Ultimately, I want the Glossier Brown Instagram page to be the go-to for women of color interested in trying Glossier products or that are already obsessed with Glossier products. Like a picture. Comment. Say hi! We're all sisters here!”

The brand itself seems to love what McGhee is doing, with both the official Glossier account and founder Emily Weiss following @glossierbrown. “A few of the community managers have reached out and they have been nothing but supportive. They’re super-proud of my growth and it literally feels like they’re family” McGhee tells Allure. And she truly appreciates that encouragement. “I recently lost my father, and he was always the first person to tell me how proud he was. No one can ever replace him, but it’s amazing to have so many sisters tell me how proud they are to be on this journey with me.”

There’s no shortage of women of color on Instagram looking gorgeous in Glossier’s current products, but that doesn’t mean McGhee doesn’t have a few fantasy products she’d like to see her favorite brand create. “I think my dream product would be a matte version of the Perfecting Skin Tint, since many people with deeper complexions (like myself) have oily skin,” she told Allure. “But my ultimate dream product would be a neroli- and chocolate-scented shimmering body oil. All women love to glow, but there is just something about shimmering body oils on brown skin, under the sun, that is just so intriguingly beautiful to me.”

No doubt, if a Glossier product like that ever does happen (fingers crossed), we’ll probably see it first on @glossierbrown.
