Who was Raquel Welch married to?

Raquel Welch started out in this world as Jo Raquel Tejada. She took the last name Welch from her first husband, James Welch. Welch was the actress’s high school sweetheart, who she married in 1959 at the age of 19 in a ceremony in Las Vegas not long after their high school graduation.

The star later said of the marriage, “By marrying Jim, I was doing something for my own personal satisfaction and pretty much in defiance of my father’s wishes. What I didn’t anticipate was how a series of events would dovetail together and forever complicate my life. Jim and I were just settling into an apartment together and tackling the realities of married life: he was looking for a job, and I was calling my mother ten times a day for recipes and tips on cleaning products.”

The marriage produced two children, Damon Welch, born in 1959, and Latanne "Tahnee" Welch, born in 1961. The couple separated the following year, in 1952, and divorced two years later, in 1964.

Ms. Welch then waited a good amount of time before walking down the aisle once again. In 1980, she married filmmaker and sometime actor André Weinfeld. The marriage lasted for 10 years and was a happy one, according to Weinfeld.

“We had a very happy marriage,” he told Closer Weekly in 2015, before discussing how geography ultimately ended the union. “She moved back to La La Land and I stayed in New York and Paris.”

Weinfeld, who the French press insulted by dubbing the pair "Beauty and the Beast" during their time together, called himself “The Champion” when discussing the longevity of their relationship, saying, “Today, Hollywood marriages last three months and that’s considered long.” But still, it seemed he had some lingering feelings toward his famous ex. “She promised me she would sail into the sunset, and I can see she hasn’t. She married after me.”

Unfortunately, the good times did not last as the two separated in 2003 and divorced the following year. Following the dissolution of this union, the actress stated she would not remarry — a statement she held true to.

The actress talked to Oprah Winfrey about the challenges of starting a family as a budding film star. “When I'm running around the world and being Miss Sex Symbol and having this big career in film and everything and I'm running from place to place, I couldn't always be with my children when I wanted to be. Eventually, I could see that this was taking its toll on my kids, and it used to just break my heart."

However, the sex symbol worked to build a better relationship with her children. “I just started out realizing that I really needed to swim out to the wave. I needed to take a lot more initiative and just keep letting them know that I wanted to be there in their lives with them, that I had something I could offer to them. Little by little, the disappointment or the lack of confidence they had in me melted away."
