Meet the Mango Float: The Filipino Dessert Pinterest Predicts Will Be This Summer's Biggest Hit

We look forward to a lot of things every summer: sunshine, campfires, BBQs, lazy pool days, and of course, the Pinterest Summer Trends Report. The highly anticipated 2024 trends report dropped today and highlights key summer trends across the food and beverage, fashion, beauty, and home decor space. However, one trend in particular caught our dessert-loving eye and it’s called the mango float.

According to Pinterest’s report, searches for “mango float” have grown by 3700% and no, I didn’t accidentally add too many zeroes onto the end of that number. So what is a mango float and how hard are they to make? Let’s break it down.

What is a mango float?

In the U.S., people typically assume a float is a big scoop of ice cream with some type of soda (usually root beer) poured over the top. But a mango float isn’t a beverage and instead, is a Filipino icebox cake dessert commonly made with layers of ladyfingers or graham crackers, whipped cream, sweetened condensed milk, and juicy, ripe mangoes. It’s perfect for summer because it requires zero baking, meaning your kitchen gets to stay nice and cool. Mangoes are also in season between May and September so it’s the best time to taste them in all their bright, juicy glory.

The concept for the recipe is pretty simple and similar to lasagna. You have your crunchy base (we love the idea from Bake With Zoha’s recipe above that uses Biscoff cookies!), creamy center, and fresh, ripe mangoes. Then all you need to do is create layers of each ingredient — as many layers as your heart desires. Then it gets chilled for a softer texture or frozen for a firmer texture before it’s served. It’s the perfect lazy, hot summer day dessert.

Mangoes are clearly the fruit of the summer because mango floats weren’t the only mango-laden treats to pop up on Pinterest’s report. Searches for mango tapioca were up by 690% while mango sago and mango chia seed pudding both saw increases of over 200%.
