The American Kennel Club announced on Jan. 3, 2024, the Lancashire heeler is the newest breed to earn the club's recognition, becoming the 201st dog breed recognized by the AKC. These heelers join the Herding Group and are now eligible to compete in AKC-sanctioned events, like dog shows and dog sports.

"We are excited to welcome the Lancashire Heeler to the AKC registry as our 201st breed," AKC Executive Secretary Gina DiNardo said in a news release. "A small, powerful herding dog that thrives on human interaction, this breed would make a great companion for active families that can provide a great deal of love and attention. We strongly encourage prospective dog owners to do their research to find the best breed for their lifestyle."

Lancashire heelers are the first breed to be recognized since the Bracco Italiano earned their recognition in 2022.

Although their exact origin is unknown, the AKC says that Lancashire heelers date back to the 17th century, and are the result of a cross between a type of Welsh corgi and the Manchester terrier. Their unique "Heeler smile" is a trademark of the breed where they draw back their lips in a way that mimics a human smile.

The Lancashire heeler was recognized by The Kennel Club in the United Kingdom in 1981 and joined the AKC Foundation Stock Service in 2001. The United States Lancashire Heeler Club was formed in 2007 and has worked since then to earn full AKC recognition for this small dog breed. A breed can earn AKC recognition by the existence of an active interest and following in the United States; an established breed club; and a "sufficient" population of dogs spread across the country.
