Meet Dayrol Griffin, the man behind the Rose Festival Grand Floral Parade float flowers

PORTLAND, Ore. (PORTLAND TRIBUNE) — A lot of people might not know Dayrol Griffin because he likes to be a “person behind the scenes, contributing any way I can, but not front and center.”

Well, it’s always a good time to honor people like Dayrol Griffin, who has been all about flowers and floats of the Grand Floral Parade for 20-plus years. He started out as a volunteer and now oversees the planting and placement of flowers on floats. He’s officially the floral director.

In this year’s Grand Floral Parade, he and his husband, Peter Eastman, will ride in a float dedicated to Griffin. It’ll be called “Dayrol’s Garden.” It’s fitting because while Griffin loves flowers, Eastman works in sales at the Al’s Garden Center nursery. Together, they have cultivated a vast garden at their home in North Portland. The couple has been together for 37 years.

“It’s happening. I don’t have a choice,” said Griffin, laughing, of the parade appearance. “I’m getting myself psyched up for it. Don’t get me wrong, I’m totally honored, over the top, ‘They’re doing this for me, it’s amazing.’”

Spoiler alert: He knows what’s going on the float. It’ll be a banana and palm tree theme with a garden arch and a fountain that represents the fountain in their yard, with water flowing down to a basin. There’ll be a bench in front, and the rest will be garden floral. “I’ve had input into it,” Griffin said. “There are so many creative people, and everybody brings different ideas to the table.”
