Escape the chaos of everyday life by creating a dedicated wellness space inside your home, whether you use it for a mindfulness activity, yoga practice or simple relaxation. Here, we've rounded up meditation room ideas from designers and bloggers that prove cultivating an at-home oasis doesn't have to be a challenge (or break your budget). We also spoke with Kim Weller, meditation practitioner and head of well-being operations at Banyan Tree Veya Phuket, who shares the importance of meditation and expert advice for designing an inviting interior.
"Meditation is a powerful tool for reducing stress and promoting overall well-being and mental health," says Weller. "Having a meditation space or room in your home can make your practice more effective and encourage a sustainable daily habit as you can easily meditate when it's convenient." Whether it's a spare room, basement or small corner, a dedicated area can help you detach from the outer world. (If you're new to meditation, try one of these meditation apps).
From incorporating houseplants and zen decor to settling on a peaceful color palette, you'll find a ton of inspiration for your at-home meditation room. Before you start your DIY project, consider these helpful design tips from Weller.
How to Design a Meditation Room:
Choose a calm, clutter-free location.
Paint the walls a soothing hue.
Establish a focal point that has significance, such as an altar or artwork.
Add soft furnishings, such as throw blankets, pillows or cushions.
Incorporate natural elements, such as hard-to-kill houseplants or stones.
Personalize the space with inspirational phrases, crystals, scented candles or essential oils.
Get Cozy With a Floor Sofa
While meditation is often practiced in a seated position on the floor, you can find a comfortable spot on cushions or couches that are low to the ground. To design this calming space, Ashton Horejs of AshtonForDesign paints the walls a soothing light green, keeps decor minimal and drapes lush houseplants from the ceiling.
Keep It Light and Bright
Neutral colors — like white, gray and tan — feel light and airy, but they also help create balance in a space. Take note from designer Sarah Barnard and allow natural light to surge into your meditation room, then add meditation cushions, pillows, blankets and yoga mats on the floor for comfort.
Make It Boho
In this magical living space, a rattan daybed layered with pillows becomes the perfect place for relaxation. This blogger hangs a bed canopy lined with string lights in the corner, then decorates the surrounding area with crystals, plants and self-care books.
Draw Inspiration From Nature
Shades of green are known to calm and relax the mind, making them a popular choice for wellness spaces. For this room, designer Maryline Damour of Damour Drake enlisted fiber artist Sienna Martz to create a striking 3D leaf installation to complement the nature-inspired green walls and surge of houseplants.

Stick to Calming Colors
Paint the walls a warm neutral shade, like off-white or beige, to create a sense of calm. Layer in shades of blue, which can help lower stress levels and encourage relaxation. In this space by BarnesVanze Architects, a window seat is ideal for lounging and reading, while a yoga mat on the floor provides a dedicated spot to practice mindfulness.

Decorate With Houseplants
In her personal meditation room, interior designer Sarah Jacquelyn goes for zen decor and a mix of greenery — most of which are hanging from a curtain rod. A hanging egg chair situated in the corner offers a cozy spot to sit and practice mindfulness.
Remove All Distractions
Located at Banyan Tree Veya Phuket in Thailand, this "White Room" is dedicated to sensory detox and meditative practices. Crisp white walls and floors are paired only with a single yoga mat and set of singing bowls.
Scatter Cushions and Pillows on the Floor
Create not one, but multiple cozy places to sit, by scattering meditation cushions, throw pillows and bean bags throughout your space. Take note from Joshua Smith Home and Design and weave in meditation accessories, like Buddha statues, singing bowls and crystals that double as decor.
Dedicate a Room for Yoga
Transform a small room into a zen yoga studio. After painting the walls an energizing blue (Sherwin-Williams' Refuge), this blogger incorporates houseplants, goes for a mid-century yoga mat and mixes in candles and incense to light before class.

Turn a sunny room into an at-home wellness space, complete with a cushy chair for reading, relaxing or thinking. Thanks to Shaw Architecture, this light-filled room has large windows that can open to bring fresh air in during your practice.
