McDonald's Unveils New Purple Shake for a Limited Time

McDonald's is adding a brand new purple shake to its menus in honor of one of its own–Grimace!

Beginning next week, fans across the nation can enjoy a one-of-a-kind meal just in time to celebrate the McDonaldland character's 51st birthday, but it'll only be around for a limited time.

Inspired by Grimace's iconic violet hue, the super sweet meal includes a limited-edition purple milkshake said to be vanilla soft serve with berry flavors to commemorate the adorable fella's love for shakes, the choice of a Big Mac® or 10-piece Chicken McNugget, and of course, fresh and golden fries.

"Our fans have amazing childhood memories of their birthdays at McDonald's...and Grimace's Birthday is all about paying homage to the amazing, fun moments we all share," said Tariq Hassan, the chief marketing and customer experience officer for McDonald's USA. "We're excited to put a modern spin on these memories to continue to drive McDonald's relevance with a new generation. Grimace is the perfect lovable icon to have McDonald's meet our fans at the intersection of nostalgia and culture."

Grimace was first introduced to McDonald's media franchise and fictional fantasy world–which also includes beloved characters like Ronald McDonald, the Hamburglar, Mayor McCheese and Captain Crook–in 1972. According to lore, the fuzzy and playful purple personality hails from Grimace Island and comes from a vast family (including his Grandma Winky, aunts Millie and Tillie and his Uncle O'Grimacey).

But that's not all. In addition to the honorary menu items, McDonald's says it will launch a one-of-a-kind Grimace merch shop and a free video game for desktop and mobile users the same day Grimace's birthday meal officially launches (Monday, June 12). In the game, players will immerse themselves in Grimace's world as he races around classic McDonald's birthday scenes to find his pals and complete the quest to cut his birthday cake.

The company also says it will donate up to $5 to Ronald McDonald House Charities for anyone who visits McDonald's Instagram story between June 13–14 and shares a picture of their favorite birthday memory at the fast food chain via the "add yours" sticker.
