McDonald’s has announced its newest McFlurry flavour, one that's made with syrup and chopped, crunchy candy pieces and described as a “sweet ode to grandmas everywhere.”

The Grandma McFlurry is the latest twist on the fast-food giant’s famous shake — this one featuring delicious syrup and crunchy candy pieces blended into creamy vanilla soft serve.

Announcing the launch of the new McFlurry on Thursday, McDonald's did not confirm an international roll-out of the flavour, but said the new McFlurry flavour is set to be available in the US for a limited time beginning May 21.

Those in New York can get a free first taste on Friday, May 17, ahead of the official debut the following week.

"Grandmas have always held a special place in our hearts," Tariq Hassan, the chief marketing and customer experience officer at McDonald’s, said in the announcement. "The Grandma McFlurry tastes like a trip down memory lane, and we’re excited to give our fans that experience while honouring the grandma-figure in all our lives."

The candy pieces and overall sweetness of the new concoction was said to be inspired by the treats grandmas often make and hide in their purse, according to McDonald’s.

To celebrate the occasion, McDonald’s is partnering with two up-and-coming artists to release “oldies reimagined with a new sound.”

Singer-songwriter Remi Wolf will cover the classic “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You),” while Latin Grammy nominee Jay Wheeler will cover “Piel Canela.” Those songs will become available on all music platforms on May 21.
