Nobody knows how to break the internet like McDonald's. Last year, when Grimace the taste bud returned to celebrate his birthday with the vibrant violet Grimace shake, social media was suddenly seeing purple. Whether it's announcing a new meal, a new sandwich, or something as simple as a change to its burgers, no news gets us clicking faster than McDonald's. And well, do we have some McDonald's news for you.

Hot on the heels of announcing the Grimace Shake is back again—but this time in Canada—Mickey D's is introducing a new, first-of-its-kind McFlurry stateside, and we don't think we're exaggerating when we say it's bound to go viral.

McDonald's Introduces New Grandma McFlurry

If you know anything about Allrecipes, it's that we love grandmas around here. From their recipes to their cooking secrets to the treats they always keep around, grandmas can do no wrong in our book. And it appears that's how McDonald's feels, too.

Instead of looking to pop culture or trending flavor profiles for inspiration for its newest menu addition, McDonald's went back to where all comfort food starts: grandma's house.

“Grandmas have always held a special place in our hearts, and today they’re having a major moment influencing culture—inspiring trends in fashion, decor and now, even food with our newest McFlurry,” said Tariq Hassan, Chief Marketing and Customer Experience Officer at McDonald’s.

So what does the new Grandma McFlurry taste like? It features a butterscotch-esque syrup and chopped, crunchy candy pieces (like the treats grandma used to hide in her purse) blended in McDonald's vanilla soft serve. Simply put, it tastes like a sweet trip down memory lane.

According to a press release, the new Grandma McFlurry was created by an actual grandma who happens to be on McDonald's culinary team. Marcelo Fajnerman, McDonald's VP Menu Strategy added, “She was relentless in perfecting a deliciously craveable treat meant to evoke special memories with grandma or the grandma-figure in your life, drawing from her own experiences.”

Sold on this nostalgic treat? The Grandma McFlurry officially hits restaurants May 21, but if you're in New York you can try it first—and for free. On May 17 and May 18, Grandma’s McFlurry Mobile will be driving around around New York City to dole out free first tastes of the new treat. And if that weren't sweet enough, it will even be making stops at senior centers and assisted living homes in the city to deliver the treat to some real life grandparents.

It's official: old is the new new.
