McDonald’s didn’t invent chicken nuggets (Robert C. Baker, a Cornell food scientist, did in the 1950s), but it was the first chain restaurant to offer them. When the restaurant offered McNuggets in the early 1980s in response to new “eat less red meat” dietary recommendations, it was a big deal—something new, kid-friendly, and pretty darn tasty. Pair the now iconic nuggets with one of McDonald’s famous dipping sauces, and there seems to be no need for a change in the flavor of McNuggets.

But back in 2020, McD’s introduced a new McNugget. It didn’t replace the existing bite-size pieces of breaded and fried white meat. Instead, it was an addition to the McNugget menu—the first one in the almost 40 years since the OG was introduced—but it didn’t stick around for long.

We’re talking about the Spicy Chicken McNuggets. The on-again, off-again menu item (kind of like the McRib, right?) is back for a limited time starting March 25.

Spicy Chicken McNuggets Are Back at McDonald's—for Now

The Spicy McNuggets have popped up as a national limited-time offer several times since their introduction; however, in 2022, McDonald's made them more exclusive, offering them as a regional limited-time menu item.

Last April, the nuggets, breaded in a crispy tempura coating and spiced with a blend of cayenne and chili pepper, showed up in Florida, and fans called for them to become a permanent menu item nationwide.

Then, last October, they started reappearing at participating locations, but still not nationwide. You may think that McDonald's is now giving the people what they want—Spicy Chicken McNuggets at every location nationwide as a permanent menu item, but alas, it's not.

We're not sure why the chain keeps dangling the Spicy Chicken Nuggets in front of only some fans' faces and then pulling them away again, but it does. As of yesterday, March 25, they're back again, but only for a limited time in San Francisco, Chicago, Miami, Philadelphia, New York City, and other participating locations (but not all).

If you are fortunate to be in a region where they're offered, you can order a 4-piece, 6-piece, 10-piece, 20-piece, or 40-piece order. But which sauce should you choose to go with your spicy order? According to Instagram's Snacklolator, they go well with the WcDonald's sauce—a savory chili sauce with ginger, garlic, soy, and chili flakes, which is available—you guessed it—at participating restaurants for a limited time.
