McDonald's Boo Buckets are back: This time with competition from Burger King

McDonald's is bringing back its iconic Boo Buckets for Happy Meals this Halloween, but this time, with competition.

The buckets, which have been a cultural phenomenon across the country since the 1980s, have been brought back sporadically over the years. Last year was the first time since 2016 that the Boo Buckets made their spooky return to McDonald's stores.

McDonald's will begin offering four "Boo Bucket" Halloween Happy Meals starting Oct. 17 – Monster, Skeleton, Mummy and Vampire.

Four different designs will be available: Skeleton; Mummy; Monster; and Vampire, which is making its return for the first time since the original buckets in 1986.

The buckets, intended to work as trick-or-treating baskets, too, have been a national favorite amongst McDonald's customers.

However, Burger King is giving McDonald's a run for its money by offering a Trick-or-Heat bucket to advertise the comeback of ghost pepper menu items, starting on Oct. 13. The bucket will be available at select metropolitan locations in Atlanta; Nashville, Tennessee; Las Vegas; and Charlotte, North Carolina. The buckets can be scored for $1 with any purchase at participating locations.

The menu additions include Ghost Pepper Chicken Fries and, of course, a Ghost Pepper Whopper.

Where do I get a Boo Bucket from McDonald's?

The Boo Bucket Halloween Meals will make their highly anticipated comeback on Oct. 17. The buckets will be available at participating locations while supplies last or through Oct. 31.

The Boo Buckets come with Happy Meals that are ordered in the restaurant or on the app, with the three classic options: four- or six-piece nuggets or a hamburger. The meals also come with fries or apple slices and a drink.

Boo Buckets are included in the price of the Happy Meal at each location as they replace the toy that comes with each kid's meal.
