McDonald's Is Adding an All-New Breakfast Sauce to Its Lineup

You feeling sweet or savory? McDonald's has both.

As of this writing, there are over 800 listings for McDonald’s sauces on eBay, with in-progress auctions for everything from the chain’s limited-edition Szechuan sauce to its Saweetie-themed Sweet and Sour packets, right down to a single unopened “McRib Sauce Pouch” that expired at the end of May. (It’s only $5.99 if you want to take a swing at it.) Looking for something a bit fresher? McDonald’s is dropping two all-new sauces at restaurants around the nation.

Only time will tell whether McDonald’s two new sauces will eventually become eBay-worthy, but you can find out for yourself when they drop at your go-to McDonald’s location on Monday, October 9.

The new sauces include its Sweet & Spicy Jam, a tangy red pepper sauce that combines cayenne pepper with a dash of apple cider vinegar and finishes with a “tongue-numbing Szechuan peppercorn kick,” according to a press release shared by the brand. This is the fast food giant’s first breakfast-inspired dipping sauce, so it’s meant to pair with McMuffins, Bacon Egg and Cheese biscuits, and Hash Browns. (But it also goes with McNuggets – and your off-menu McBrunch sandwich if you want to bring a bit of heat to your 10:35 a.m. order.)

The second new addition is McDonald’s Mambo Sauce, a spice-and-vinegar sauce inspired by Washington, D.C.’s fave condiment for fried rice, fried shrimp, and hot wings. (Buffalo, New York, has a legitimate claim to mambo sauce too, but McD’s specifically says that it based its sauce on the Capital City’s version.)

"We get inspiration for the food our fans love by exploring the incredible tastes and flavors found in communities across the country," Tariq Hassan, chief marketing and customer experience officer at McDonald’s USA, said in a statement. “Sweet & Spicy Jam and Mambo Sauce live at the intersection of flavor and culture - pulling from decades of rich food history and tradition in local restaurants and home kitchens and bringing the delicious spice, sweetness, and kick of heat we know today’s customers are craving.”

McDonald’s also wants to pay homage to the restaurants, “sauce makers,” and creators who have continued to spread the word about Mambo sauce — or Mumbo sauce, depending on which takeout joint you hit — so it will be debuting an original Mambo-themed documentary on its YouTube channel on October 9. (If you’re from outside the D.C. metro area, it’s probably best if you have a packet of Mambo sauce to sample while you watch that mini-doc.)

McDonald’s hasn’t said whether these sauces are limited editions or if they’re permanent additions to the menu, but a lot of its previous sauces only stuck around for a short time. Those covetable cups of Big Mac Sauce, for example, came and went between late April and mid-May. So if you’re interested in trying its new Sweet & Spicy Jam and Mambo Sauce, it’s probably better to go sooner rather than later. Otherwise, you’re stuck scrolling through eBay, wondering how expired is too expired for a sauce packet to be.
