McDonald’s unveils new Grandma McFlurry flavor, free in NYC on Friday

McDonald’s on Thursday announced its newest McFlurry flavor, described as a “sweet ode to grandmas everywhere.”

The Grandma McFlurry is the latest twist on the fast-food giant’s famous shake — this one featuring delicious syrup and crunchy candy pieces blended into creamy vanilla soft serve.

The new McFlurry flavor will be available for a limited time beginning May 21, but those in NYC can get a free first taste on Friday.

In anticipation of the debut the next week, Grandma’s McFlurry Mobile will be popping up in Herald Square, on the corner of W 34th St. and Broadway, between 1 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

On Saturday afternoon, Grandma’s McFlurry Mobile will also travel to senior centers and assisted living homes in East Harlem and Flushing to spread the good eats and “create more moments of connection between grandparents” and their families.

“Grandmas have always held a special place in our hearts,” Tariq Hassan, the chief marketing and customer experience officer at McDonald’s, said in Thursday’s announcement. “The Grandma McFlurry tastes like a trip down memory lane, and we’re excited to give our fans that experience while honoring the grandma-figure in all our lives.”

The candy pieces and overall sweetness of the new concoction is reportedly inspired by the treats grandmas often make (and hide in their purse, according to McDonald’s).

To mark the release, the company also announced it will be donating to Little Brothers – Friends of the Elderly, a national organization whose mission is to support older adults experiencing isolation and loneliness.

And to further celebrate the occasion, McDonald’s is partnering with two up-and-coming artists to release “oldies reimagined with a new sound.”

Singer-songwriter Remi Wolf will cover the classic “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You),” while Latin Grammy nominee Jay Wheeler will cover “Piel Canela.”

Those songs will become available on all music platforms on May 21.
