McDonald’s Is Launching a Spicy New Anime-Inspired Dipping Sauce

McDonald’s is cashing in anime’s popularity with a brand new dipping sauce and an exclusive series of episodic short films.

On February 26, McDonald’s will unveil its Savory Chili "WcDonald's" Sauce. According to the fast food chain, their WcDonald’s sauce is a "unique combination of ginger, garlic, and soy with a slight heat from chili flakes.” It “packs an energetic blast of flavor in every bite," just like the "dynamic spirit of your favorite anime heroes."

Savory Chili WcDonald’s Sauce will be available in 30 markets beginning next Monday. You can pair it with fries, sandwiches and burgers, or with “WcNuggets,” a temporary rebranding of the chain’s classic Chicken McNuggets.

The sauces will be available for a limited time in exclusive packaging designed by iconic Japanese manga artist/illustrator Acky Bright. The chain is also collaborating with the animation studio Pierrot to debut an official WcDonald’s anime.

Customers can dive deeper into the WcDonald’s universe with the four episodic shorts, which drop a new installment each Monday from Feb. 26 until March 18. Each of the shorts is inspired by one of anime’s most popular subgenres—action, romance, mecha, and fantasy. You can access the shorts by scanning the QR code on your WcDonald’s bag, or heading over to WcDonalds.com.

The introduction of Savory Chili WcDonald’s Sauce comes just a few months after the chain introduced its limited-edition Mambo Sauce and its Sweet and Spicy Jam dip. It’s one of several changes McDonald’s has implemented recently, after the chain revamped its signature Big Mac, brought back a breakfast favorite, and recommitted itself to affordability.
