McCormick County yacht club ready for Memorial Day

PLUM BRANCH, S.C. (WJBF) – Memorial Day weekend is here and that means many people will be heading to the lake.

Plum Branch Yacht Club has been preparing for an influx of boaters and campers, and they’re ready for the festivities to begin.

“It means starting out the summer with all the campers coming in,” said Office Assistant Danielle Jordan. “It also means that we have to make sure that we’re stocked up on everything that we need.”

They’ve been stocking up on gas and boating necessities, making sure the grounds look nice and visitors have everything they need.

Club leaders and the McCormick County Chamber of Commerce tell us this season is a big economic boost for the area.

“Basically it’s more traffic, it’s busier, the campsites are full, all of the above,” Jordan said. “And then McCormick actually gets a lot of feet, too, because they have Food Lion and things like that for the grocery store.”

Some boaters started the weekend early.

“It’s pretty nice out here, nice atmosphere, get out there and get in the water,” said DeVonne Quattlebaum. “I didn’t know what to expect when I first got here, first time been out there on the water. But, other than that it was pretty great. We already planned to come out here and have some lunch at the Lakeside Grill.”

The Lakeside Grill is a main attraction and brings in money for the club.

“More than that, a local hang out for the local people. We want to provide good food at a good price for our local folks,” said Lakeside Grill Operator Beth McCullough. “And our goal is to pick up enough road traffic that we don’t realize summer is over, that the boats have stopped coming. We want to pick up enough foot traffic and road traffic that we stay open year round.”

Besides buying supplies from the boat shop and eating at the grill, people will be coming out for the main event on Sunday.

“From 6-9 p.m. is gonna be like our Memorial celebration. We’ll have the Keith Clark band come in and they’ll be playing down here at the pavilion over by the grill,” Jordan said. “And then the grill will be open all evening from 12-9, so they’ll be serving food and we’ll have some food trucks. So just good food, friends, and family.”

The grill will be open from 12-4 p.m. on Monday.

All are welcome at the non-member club.
