Maya Rudolph Reacts to Kamala Harris Becoming Joe Biden's Running Mate

Maya Rudolph’s Kamala Harris impression, as seen on Saturday Night Live, is a pure delight—and we will hopefully see a lot more of it when the show returns this fall.

On August 11, presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden named Harris, currently a senator from California, as his running mate. Soon after, people took to social media to express their excitement about the historic nomination. (Harris is the first Black woman to run on a major party ticket.)

And of course, Rudolph had a hilarious reaction to the big news. The actor happened to be recording a panel discussion with fellow Emmy nominees for Entertainment Weekly when the news was broken to the group by Angela Bassett. (Rudolph’s nom actually comes for playing Harris on SNL.)

“Oh, shit,” Rudolph said after hearing the news. “I’m as surprised as you are, guys. That’s spicy.

“I love going to the show. Any excuse I can get, I love. I just didn’t really anticipate traveling during a pandemic, but if there’s anyone that can work it out, I’m sure Lorne [Michaels] has some sort of invisible helicopter that can get me there,” she continued.

Rudolph went on to talk about why she loves going back to SNL, where she was a regular cast member from 2000 to 2007. “Ever since I was a kid, truly, I wanted to be on any kind of SCTV, Saturday Night Live, and I can’t believe that I got to work there, and I can’t believe that it’s my family still,” she said. “I’m so thrilled to even be associated with the show and that I got to go back. It’s like the gift that keeps on giving. Honestly, it’s my favorite place to play.”

People on social media were also very excited about the prospect of more sketches featuring Maya Rudolph as Kamala Harris. “Vote Biden this election season so we can have 4 well-deserved years of a Maya Rudolph Kamala impression on SNL,” one person tweeted. “I can’t wait to see Maya Rudolph be Kamala Harris on SNL weekly for the foreseeable future...” another wrote.
